NPYS U9 Girls Team
The U9 Girls Competitive team philosophy this season has been to build great players slowly through technical development and high energy training. The U9 program training regimen consisted of Coerver style technical development, agility, strength, and endurance training through small sided games and individual skill building exercises. As a team, we did not begin tactical training until the end of the year instead deciding the long term growth of each young player was more important than short term game wins. The methods we deployed this season assured our players would have a strong technical base and guaranteed the team would find success as the season progressed.
NPYC U9 girls had an exciting end to a tough season. At the beginning of our season we had a completely new young roster with all players coming from U8 Rec teams, no player had any competitive experience or time on a U9 sized field. As our players skills improved the gap between the local clubs and our own slowly narrowed. The girls capped off the season with a tie then a 3 game winning streak and took 2nd place in our division at the Largo March Madness Tournament; validating the clubs philosophy that individual skills trump sheer tactical training.
The U9 Girls team has many returning players next season and will give the coaching staff an opportunity to train new players with an experienced core team. Our goal is to have two full U9 competitive teams, ensuring every player not only starts but gets to experience playing a full game in a highly competitive league.
We have many new exciting plans for next season. We will continue with the training philosophy of the Coerver style/Barca training regimen. We will also continue our 365 training program, this assures our players continue to grow even off season. The program stresses pure technical training during off season and slowly builds on this technic with challenging skills competitions and of course tactical training as the season begins. The girls are currently playing against the NPYS rec boys and girls U10 teams to develop stronger tactical possession skills in a fun and stress free environment.
The U9 coaching staff intends to enter a minimum of 4 major tournaments next season including Largo Halloween tournament, Sarasota Cup, Adidas Cup, and Largo March Madness; there are also other tournaments available that the team can consider. The league game season begins in October/November and ends in February with games every Saturday. U9 coaching staff will also stress athlete nutrition next season by bringing in nutritionist from Sarasota County. The U9 team also has the advantage of an intensive weekly training session with Director of Competitive Soccer Troy Edwards. As the girls improve the coaching staff will continue to challenge the team both physically and mentally through web based training challenges and on field competition.
As head coach I also believe in the need for fun! Last season we had team parties, cookouts, and beach “practices” stressing team camaraderie that builds not only great players but strong teams and great friendships; after all they are still 7-9 year olds. We also strive to include the parents on the team with positions available as manager, assistant coaches, web manager, team photographer, fundraising director and equipment manager.
As Bear Bryant said: “It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.”
